Types of Writing & Subject Matter

 

Fiction: I offer editing services for all fiction genres as well as all lengths, from micro-fiction to novels. I have particular familiarity with the following genres: science fiction, fantasy, new adult, young adult, and romance (including queer, polyamorous, kinky, and erotica).

 

Poetry: My primary experience is with free verse, but feel free to contact me about other styles.

 

Copyediting

 

Focus: Grammar, correct word usage, punctuation, capitalization, verb-tense consistency, spacing. My copyediting also usually includes some light line editing (mainly spotting awkward phrasing and word/phrase overuse).

 

Turnaround: Average 2-3 weeks for novel length, but I can give you a more specific estimate when we discuss your project.

 

Rate: $.007 per word.

 

Developmental Editing

 

Focus: The big picture of the story. I'll be looking at themes and the execution of the story (characters, plot, structure). This service is especially useful if you're working with a lot of questions. For instance, if you're trying to understand what your main conflict is or if you feel that the structure needs tweaking but you're not sure how to go about it.

 

Turnaround: Average 1 month for novel length, but I can give you a more specific estimate when we discuss your project.

 

Rate: $.007 per word.

 

Sensitivity Reading

 

Focus: The treatment of marginalized characters and marginalized groups within your work. I am most effective as a sensitivity reader when drawing upon my personal or familial experience. If you're writing about a group outside of my experience and I don't feel that I can give you adequate feedback, I will let you know that you'll need someone else to look at that specific character/area of worldbuilding/etc., and I'll point you in the direction of appropriate resources if I'm able to do so.

Cheerleading

 

Focus: Helping you and offering you the support you need. When I'm copyediting or developmentally editing, I tend to focus mainly on critique. Cheerleading can take many different forms:

• Reading your work and letting you know what's great about it. Please keep in mind that this will not be me dishonestly telling you your work is great: I'm a terrible liar. This will be me seeing all the promise and ability that you already have and hopefully helping you recognize it, as well.
• Offering check-in support throughout the submissions process.
• Chat appointments where we brainstorm, or where you're accountable to me to work on writing/editing.
• Offering you encouragement and support in whatever way is most helpful for you -- feel free to let me know!
